5. Have you budgeted for oil?

The most common first-purchase mistake. A diffuser produces nothing without fragrance oil — it isn't a device that works less well empty, it does nothing at all.

Three things to get right on day one

Start at the lowest setting. Almost every new owner runs their diffuser too high. You stop registering your own home's scent within about twenty minutes, so your instinct to turn it up is unreliable. Ask someone who doesn't live there.

Use scheduled run windows, not continuous output. Short bursts before you get home and in the evening produce a house that always smells right, on a fraction of the oil. Continuous output is what reads as air freshener.

Put it where air moves. A hallway junction or an open living area near where people walk carries scent much further than a corner. Don't tuck it behind furniture.
