What Size Diffuser Do I Need? The Complete Sizing Guide
Almost every diffuser question starts the same way: how big does it need to be? It's the right question, but the answer isn't a single number. Square footage gets you most of the way there — then ceiling height, closed doors and how your home moves air decide the rest. Here's how to size a cold-air diffuser properly, plus where each Mila Marie Scents unit lands. If you want the short version: most single rooms are handled by the Elite Mini Pro at $99, and whole-home coverage starts with a ducted unit.

Start With the Space, Not the Product
Measure the area you actually want to smell the fragrance in — not your home's total square footage from the listing. A 2,400 sq ft house where you only care about the main floor is a 1,200 sq ft scenting problem. A 900 sq ft condo with an open kitchen, living and dining area is one connected volume, and one unit handles it.
Write down two numbers: the open area you want covered, and the number of rooms behind closed doors you also want scented. The second number is the one that changes which product you need, and it's the one most buying guides skip.

What Coverage Numbers Actually Mean
Every coverage figure you see — ours included — is manufacturer-stated. There is no shared industry testing standard for diffuser coverage, so a competitor's "1,500 sq ft" and our "1,500 sq ft" were not measured the same way. Treat the number as a ceiling under good conditions: open space, standard ceilings, reasonable airflow.
Real coverage drops when ceilings are tall, when the space is broken up by walls and corners, or when the unit sits low and behind furniture. It improves when the diffuser is placed in moving air — near a return vent, at the top of a stairwell, or in the path of a ceiling fan on low.
The Size Chart: Square Footage to Diffuser
| Space | Product | Coverage | Power | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car, desk, small room | Elite Car Pro | Not rated in sq ft | Rechargeable, USB-C | $79 |
| Bedroom, office, up to 700 sq ft | ECHO Mini | Up to 700 sq ft | Cordless, 3 D batteries (not included) | $89 |
| Open main floor, no outlet nearby | Elite Mini Pro | Up to 1,800 sq ft | Cordless, rechargeable USB-C | $99 |
| Living room or suite, up to 1,500 sq ft | ECHO | Up to 1,500 sq ft | Plug-in, free-standing | $139 |
| Whole floor through the vents | PULSE | Up to 1,800 sq ft | HVAC-connected or standalone | $149 |
| Great room, loft, open 4,000 sq ft | HALO Tower | Up to 4,000 sq ft open space | Plug-in floor tower | $229, or $299 with three 200ml oils |
| Whole home, 1,500–6,000+ sq ft | INFINITY | Rated to 16,000 sq ft | HVAC-connected | $399 with three oils |
Two units share the 1,800 sq ft rating and solve different problems. The Elite Mini Pro is cordless, so it goes where there's no outlet and moves between rooms. The PULSE connects to HVAC ductwork rated up to a 2.5 ton AC — or runs standalone in a large room if you'd rather not touch the duct.

Closed Doors Change Everything
This is the single most useful sizing rule we can give you: cold-air mist does not pass a closed door. A 1,800 sq ft rating assumes the air can get there. Put a standalone diffuser in the hallway of a four-bedroom house with every door shut, and you have scented the hallway.
Only the ducted units reach closed rooms, because they put fragrance into the air the HVAC system is already pushing through every vent. If your list included bedrooms that stay shut, you want the PULSE for a floor or the INFINITY for a whole house. If every space you care about is open to the next, a standalone unit is the cheaper and simpler answer.

When Two Small Units Beat One Big One
Buyers often assume the fix for patchy coverage is a bigger machine. Frequently it isn't. A home split across two floors with no shared ductwork can't be solved by one standalone unit at any size — the mist won't climb the stairs reliably. Two well-placed units, one per floor, give more even scent than a single larger one fighting the layout. The same holds for an L-shaped plan, a long hallway with rooms off it, or a basement: if your space has a pinch point, put a unit on each side of it. Our pairing guide walks through when this makes sense, and the two-floor ductless scenario covers the most common version of it.
Ceiling Height and Other Things That Shift the Math
Coverage ratings are stated in square feet, but fragrance fills volume. A 600 sq ft room with 9-foot ceilings is a different job than the same footprint under a 20-foot vaulted ceiling — there's more than twice the air. In vaulted or double-height spaces, size up a tier or expect to run a higher intensity setting.
A few other adjustments: homes with strong cross-ventilation lose scent out the windows, kitchens that cook daily need more output than the footprint suggests, and humid climates make scent feel heavier, so start lower than you think.
Every one of our home diffusers — ECHO Mini, Elite Mini Pro, ECHO, PULSE, HALO Tower and INFINITY — has Bluetooth app control for scheduling and intensity. Being honest about the tradeoff: that's Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi. You control it from inside the home, in range. There's no remote access from the office, no Alexa, no Google Home, no cloud account. For most households that's a non-issue, and for some people it's a dealbreaker worth knowing about before you buy.

Still Not Sure? Start With Scent, Not Hardware
Sizing is reversible; a fragrance you dislike is the thing people actually regret. If you're still deciding, the Scent Card Sample Pack is $15 and includes 15 scent cards you smell by hand — no diffuser required. It's the cheapest way to find the scent you want before you choose the machine that spreads it.

Once you know the scent, oils come in 120ml, 200ml and 500ml, and the 500ml is the best value per millilitre. Shipping is free over $150, and our diffusers carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee with no restocking fee. Opened oil can't be returned, which is exactly why the sample cards exist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just buy the biggest diffuser and turn it down?
Often yes — running a larger unit at a low intensity setting is fine. But it won't fix a layout problem: an oversized standalone unit still can't push mist through a closed door. If closed rooms are the issue, spend on ducted coverage rather than raw output.
Do I need to add my home's total square footage or just the open area?
Just the area you want scented, and only the parts connected by open air. Rooms behind closed doors should be counted separately and solved with a ducted unit or their own small diffuser.
What if my space falls between two sizes?
Size up. A unit running comfortably below its maximum lasts longer between refills at a given setting and gives you headroom for winter, when closed windows change how scent behaves. Sizing down and running at full output constantly is the worse outcome.
Does a cordless diffuser cover less than a plug-in one?
Not necessarily. The cordless Elite Mini Pro is rated to 1,800 sq ft — higher than the plug-in ECHO's 1,500. Power source and coverage are separate decisions. Pick coverage for the space and power for where you can actually put the unit.
Can one diffuser handle a two-story home?
Only if it's ducted. A standalone unit on one floor won't reliably scent the other. With shared ductwork, the INFINITY handles a whole house from one install. Without it, plan on one unit per floor.
How do I know if it's working if I stop noticing the scent?
That's nose blindness, not a sizing failure — you adapt to a constant fragrance within days. Schedule the unit to run in cycles rather than continuously, and rotate oils every few weeks. Guests will still notice it even when you don't.
