Which Diffuser for an Apartment?

Why the mini-split doesn't help

Plenty of apartments run mini-splits or PTAC units, and people reasonably assume that's a distribution system.

It isn't. Each head recirculates the air already in its own zone rather than moving air between rooms. It'll push scent around the room the diffuser is in — running it on fan-only genuinely helps there — but it won't carry fragrance down a hallway.

So plan around the rooms you actually want scented rather than expecting the system to spread it.

Placement in a small space

Put it where you walk. Foot traffic and door swings move more air in an apartment than any appliance. A hallway junction or the area between kitchen and living space beats a corner shelf.

Don't hide it. Behind a sofa or inside a cabinet, most of the output goes into the furniture.

Start much lower than the rating suggests. A unit rated for 1,800 sq ft in a 750 sq ft apartment is a lot of capacity. Run it at the lowest setting for a week — that's a feature, not a waste, because a system running well below its limit is quieter and uses less oil.

Use short scheduled windows. An hour before you get home and an hour in the evening reads as a home that always smells right. Continuous output in a small space reads as air freshener.

Neighbours and shared walls

Two questions that come up constantly.

Clean registers — tea, light citrus, soft musk — work best because you can live with them daily. Rich, heavy fragrances are wonderful in a large entryway and overwhelming in 700 sq ft.
