The closed-door problem

Here is the honest limitation, and it matters more at a party than at any other time: cold-air mist does not pass a closed door. A diffuser in the living room does nothing for the guest bathroom while someone is in it, or for the bedroom where the coats are piled.

Choosing a scent that doesn't fight the food

A holiday kitchen already produces a powerful smell, usually a good one. The goal is not to cover it but to give the rooms away from the kitchen a character of their own, so the house does not read as gravy throughout.

Two rules of thumb. Pick clean over sweet — gourmand and spiced fragrances compete with cooking food, while a crisp tea, citrus or woody note sits alongside it. And put the strongest scent furthest from the kitchen.
