Ductless Home, Two Floors: One Diffuser or Two?

If your home runs on mini-splits, window units or baseboard heat, there's no ductwork to carry scent between floors. In a ducted house you buy one unit and the air handler distributes. In a ductless two-story home, you are the distribution system — so the question is whether one diffuser can physically reach both levels, or whether you need one on each.

Short answer: one unit works if your staircase is open and your doors stay open. If not, two smaller units beat one large one almost every time. Here's how to tell which you are before spending anything.

What's in this guide

Why a staircase is not a duct

Cold-air diffusers atomize fragrance oil into a dry nano mist — no heat, no water — and let the room's own air movement carry it. That mist travels well through open space and badly through anything narrow.

A staircase moves air in one direction, upward, and only when a temperature difference is driving it. Warm air rises up the stairwell and takes fragrance with it. That's why a ground-floor diffuser often scents the upstairs landing surprisingly well, and why the same unit placed upstairs almost never scents the floor below.

So before you count square footage, stand at the bottom of your stairs and look up. If you can see the upstairs ceiling from the entry, you have an open stairwell and a real chance at one-unit coverage. If the stairs turn, pass through a door, or end in a closed hallway, you have two zones whatever the floor plan says.

For most open-stairwell homes, the unit that does the work is the Elite Mini Pro — rated up to 1,800 sq ft, under 35 dB, and cordless. Ductless homes tend to be older homes, and older homes put outlets in inconvenient places.

What ductless rules out — and what it doesn't

Two of our units connect to existing HVAC ductwork: the PULSE and the INFINITY. With no ducts, the INFINITY is off the table — it has nothing to connect to.

The PULSE is the exception worth knowing about: it connects to ductwork rated up to a 2.5 ton AC system, or runs standalone in a large room, which keeps it in play for a ductless home with one big main floor. It uses 200ml oil bottles, up to 30 days per bottle, and is sold without oil.

Everything else is free-standing by design and works the same ducted or not: the ECHO Mini, the Elite Mini Pro, the ECHO and the HALO Tower — the HALO Tower being a floor unit that never connects to ductwork at all.

The test: count doors, not square feet

Coverage ratings are manufacturer-stated, and there's no shared industry testing standard behind them. They assume open space, standard ceilings and air that moves — ceiling height and closed doors change what you actually get.

Cold-air mist does not pass a closed door. That's the most useful fact in this decision, and it's why only the ducted units reach rooms you keep shut. In a ductless home, no diffuser gets behind a closed bedroom door, however large its rating. So count the doors you keep closed, not the rooms you own.

  • Open stairwell, doors mostly open, under ~1,800 sq ft total. One Elite Mini Pro on the ground floor, placed near the base of the stairs. Start here — it's the cheapest path to a whole-house result.
  • Open stairwell but a closed-door upstairs (bedrooms shut at night, office shut during the day). Two units. One main-floor unit plus a small one upstairs beats a single big one, because the upstairs unit is working inside the zone it needs to scent.
  • Enclosed or turning staircase. Two units, no question. Treat the floors as two separate homes.
  • Large open main floor, modest upstairs. HALO Tower downstairs (rated up to 4,000 sq ft of open space, 800ml reservoir), ECHO Mini upstairs.

Two moderate units usually also give you something one large one can't: different intensity on each floor. Bedrooms want less than living rooms.

Running two units without doubling the work

Two diffusers sounds like twice the maintenance. It isn't, because both chores scale better than you'd think.

Oil: buy one scent in a larger size rather than two bottles of two scents. Oils come in 120ml, 200ml and 500ml, and the 500ml is the best value per milliliter. Running the same scent on both floors also avoids the thing that makes two-unit homes smell wrong — two fragrances meeting at the top of the stairs.

Control: the ECHO Mini, Elite Mini Pro, ECHO, PULSE, HALO Tower and INFINITY all have Bluetooth app control, so schedule and intensity are set from your phone. Be clear about what Bluetooth means, though — it's in-home only. No remote access from work, no Alexa, no Google Home, no cloud. For a home you live in that's usually fine; for a property you manage from elsewhere it's a real limitation, and worth knowing before you buy.

If you're not ready to commit

Scent is the one product category you can't evaluate from a description. The Scent Card Sample Pack is $15 for 15 scent cards you smell by hand — they're cards, not bottled oil, so they can't be run in a diffuser, but they settle the "which scent" question before you've bought a unit to put it in.

Our fragrance oils are blended to IFRA standards. Diffusers carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee with no restocking fee, and shipping is free over $75. Opened oil can't be returned, which is the other reason to start with cards.

Frequently asked questions

Will one diffuser downstairs scent my upstairs?
Often yes, if the staircase is open — warm air rising up the stairwell carries the mist with it. The reverse rarely works: a unit placed upstairs seldom scents the floor below, because scent doesn't travel down well.

Can I just use my mini-splits to move the scent?
No. A mini-split recirculates air within the room it's mounted in; it has no ductwork to carry anything to another room or floor. Placement does the job that ducts would have done.

Is the PULSE useless without ductwork?
No — it runs standalone in a large room as well as ducted. It's a reasonable main-floor choice in a ductless home, and it leaves the door open if ductwork is ever added.

Two units or one bigger one — which is cheaper to run?
Two moderate units often use less oil overall, because each runs at a lower intensity in a smaller zone instead of one unit running hard to push mist somewhere it can't reach.

Should both floors use the same scent?
Usually, yes. Two different fragrances meeting in a stairwell is the most common self-inflicted problem in a two-unit home. Same scent, different intensity, is the reliable setup.

Can I control the upstairs unit from work?
No. Our diffusers use Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi — control happens from inside the home, with no remote access and no smart-speaker integration.
