Most fall home fragrance smells like a candle aisle. Sugar, vanilla, and a wall of cinnamon that gives you a headache by the second evening. It is the reason a lot of people who love autumn refuse to scent their house for it.

The problem is not the season. It is that most fall scents are built cheap, heated, and sweetened to cover it.

Why most fall scents go wrong

Three things are usually to blame.

Heat. Candles and plug-ins work by heating fragrance. Heat destroys top notes first, which are the bright, complex parts of a scent. What is left after twenty minutes is the heavy base: sugar, vanilla, musk. That is why a candle smells great when you light it and flat an hour later.
