What those coverage numbers actually mean

Here's the part most comparison posts skip: there is no shared testing standard for diffuser coverage. Every figure on this page — ours included — is manufacturer-stated. Nobody is measuring these units the same way, so "4,000 sq ft" from one brand and "1,800 sq ft" from another are not directly comparable the way two air conditioners' BTU ratings would be.

What changes real-world coverage more than the number on the box:

• Ceiling height. Coverage is quoted in square feet, but scent fills cubic feet. A 1,500 sq ft home with 12-foot ceilings is a meaningfully bigger job than the same footprint at 8 feet.
• Closed doors. Cold-air mist does not pass a closed door. This is the single biggest reason people feel a diffuser is underperforming.
• How your HVAC actually runs. Both of these units distribute through your ductwork, which means they only distribute while the system is moving air. A house whose AC cycles rarely in spring will scent differently than the same house in August.

A note on Bluetooth

Both units use Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi. For ours that's deliberate: Bluetooth doesn't drop when your router reboots, doesn't need a firmware update to keep working, and doesn't stop functioning if a cloud service is retired. A diffuser should still work in five years.

The honest tradeoff: you can't control it from outside the home. If you want to switch the scent on from the airport before you land, neither of these units will do that. Schedules run on the device, so you can set it to come on before you arrive — you just can't change your mind remotely.
