Reception and a treatment room are not the same environment, and scenting them the same way is the most common mistake in spa and clinic fragrance.

The difference is exposure time, and it changes everything about the right setting.

Four minutes versus sixty

A client passes through reception briefly, arriving from outside with a fresh nose. A fragrance with presence registers immediately and pleasantly, and then they move on.

The same client then lies face-down on a table for an hour, breathing through a face cradle, often with their eyes closed and nothing else to attend to. Scent that read as welcoming at the door can become the most noticeable thing in the room by minute forty.

Nobody complains about this. They just don't rebook, and they describe the experience as "a bit much" if asked.

The rule: same fragrance, lower level

Use one scent throughout the premises and vary the intensity by room. Different fragrances between reception and treatment rooms create a jarring transition every time someone moves between them, which reads as disorganised rather than layered.

Rooms to leave unscented

Three, and we'd argue for all of them.

Injection and laser rooms. Clients associate these with clinical care, and fragrance doesn't soften that — it just adds something else to process while they're already tense.

Post-procedure recovery. Someone who's just had a treatment may be nauseated, light-headed, or sensitive in ways they weren't an hour earlier.

Consultation rooms where you take medical history. If a client is about to tell you about their migraines or their asthma, a scented room is an awkward place to have that conversation.

Leaving rooms unscented isn't a failure of the system. It's the system being used properly.

The face cradle problem

Worth its own mention because it's specific to treatment rooms.

A client face-down is breathing air from a small volume close to the table, often for an hour. Whatever is in that air is concentrated relative to what someone standing in the room experiences.

Practical consequence: judge a treatment room's level by lying on the table, not by standing in the doorway. It's a thirty-second test and it changes what most people would have set.

Placement inside the room

Away from the head of the table. The obvious place to put a small unit is the shelf nearest the client. That's the wrong end.

Not near the extractor. Many treatment rooms have ventilation that will pull fragrance straight out, which means you'll compensate by raising the level and end up with a strong room and a wasted bottle.

Out of reach. Clients shouldn't be able to adjust it, and nor should the room be rearranged around it between appointments.

Build a switch-off into the booking

Some clients will need the room unscented, and the moment to find out is at booking rather than when they're on the table.
